Power outage forced early dismissal at 2 DD4 schools

DORCHESTER COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Two Dorchester County District 4 schools are being dismissed early Wednesday because of a power failure.

Harleyville Elementary School and Harleyville-Ridgeville Middle School will dismiss all students at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to DD4 spokesperson Val Anderson.

The outage affected 476 Dorchester County residents in Harleyville and St. George according to Dorchester County Administrator Jason Ward. The area affected is near Highway 78 between Sandridge Road and East Main Street in Harleyville and St. George.

Parents were being notified about the early dismissal through the schools' automated call systems, Anderson said.

SCE&G spokesperson Kim Asbill says a bird made its way into the utility's equipment causing the outage. Crews are on the scene making repairs, but they estimated it would take a few hours to do so, leading the district to the decision to dismiss those two schools early.
