CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Future Drive and Northside Drive Extension is now complete. On Saturday, Charleston County Government and the City of North Charleston held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the $49 million project.
'A New Day A New Way,' that's what Grace Alliance Church is calling the opening of the Future Drive and North Side Drive Extension Project. The church is located on Northside Drive.
"We've been waiting 37 years for this road," says Interim Pastor for Grace Alliance Church, Gabe Galdo. "When the church bought the property 37 years ago we were promised that we would have the road the following year."
Galdo along with others say the road is going to be their new shortcut.
"I don't have to take a five minute detour that way to get on I-26 just to make a U-turn in essence," says Sally Archie who lives near the road.
"It's been a long, long time coming, but where here," says Mayor of North Charleston, Keith Summey.
Summey says this new road will ease traffic on Ashley Phosphate and Highway 78. Northside Drive was extended, running parallel to I-26. It turns into Ingleside Boulevard to intersect with Highway 78. You can also take Future Drive to Palmetto Commerce Parkway.
"If I hit the Ashley Frustrate...traffic real bad, it would take me a good hour to get over here now it'll only probably take me like 15 minutes," says Galdo.
The new roads also include sidewalks, crosswalks, and an enclosed drainage system among other things. The project was funded by the Charleston County Transportation Sales Tax, approved by voters in 2006.
"We are excited to no longer be at the end of a dead end street," says Galdo.
