Some elementary students on James Island had a special chance to honor veterans by giving up their recess on Friday.
At Harbor View Elementary, three classes of fifth graders sponsored a "Victory Lap for Veterans" event to honor those who have served.
Fifth graders came up with the idea for the event last year, and this year's students are carrying on the new tradition. Approximately 85 fifth grade kids walked laps voluntarily while wearing patriotic colors and carrying their book bags, giving up their recess to walk. Other grades were also invited to walk the playground course.
The fifth grade classes will also present their research on veterans and history of Veteran's Day to the school. Teacher Jennifer Tillman says learning about veterans can be personal for some kids.
“We started hearing about all the relatives that were veterans and people wanted to tell their stories,” Tillman said. “And the kids had that moment to share their own personal experience.”
