NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - More than a thousand people gathered in the quad of Military Magnet Academy in North Charleston Friday for the school's annual Veterans Day program.
Approximately 500 Military Magnet students paraded through the center of the school campus as students from other Charleston County schools watched.
The academy hosts the event each year to show gratitude to local veterans, Principal Anderson Townsend said.
Friday's ceremony was complete with a wreath-laying, a cannon salute, and a Coast Guard flyover. There was also a special presentation of medals to the more than one hundred veterans who attended the program.
Townsend said there's one thing veterans have in common.
"We may not serve in the same unit together, but we served together, and we served our great, great nation," Townsend said.
Townsend also hopes the hundreds of students watching Friday's program take away the message of how important it is to honor veterans as well as show respect for the nation.
