GEORGETOWN, SC (WCSC) - A newly elected Georgetown City councilman is accused of third-degree attempted criminal sexual conduct with a minor.
Investigators arrested 43-year-old Sheldon Amonda Butts of Georgetown on Saturday.
Butts was elected to the Georgetown City Council last Tuesday.
Georgetown Police Department officials say Butts' arrest stems from an ongoing investigation.
"The four week investigation concluded with the 15th Judicial Circuit Solicitor's office authorizing the criminal charge," GCPD officials said.
An arrest warrant states Butts attempted to commit a lewd act on a minor under the age of 16 at an address on Brinkley Street between June 20 and July 27.
"The act was the touching of the victim's buttocks underneath the clothing with the intent of gratifying his lust, passions or dersires," the warrant stated.
Authorities say the act caused the victim to feel uncomfortable and afraid.
According to police, Butts surrendered himself to law enforcement at the Georgetown County Detention Center.
Butts won one of the three open City of Georgetown council seats last week. Butts received 901 votes, securing him the third and final seat in the race.
Butts also works as a special education teacher and JV girls basketball coach at Georgetown High School, according to the Georgetown County School District website.
District officials say Butts is on administrative leave with pay.
