COTTAGEVILLE, SC (WCSC) - A North Charleston man died in a car accident in Colleton County over the weekend.
The Colleton County Coroner's Office says 46-year-old Timur Zapparoz was pronounced dead on Saturday night.
Emergency officials say the single car accident happened at the 25000 block of Augusta Highway in Cottageville.
Officials with the Colleton County Fire and Rescue Department say nearby residents heard the accident and rushed to the scene to assist the man.
"Bystanders told 9-1-1 Operators the driver did not appear to be breathing," CCFR officials said."Engine 9 and Medic 9 arrived about 15 minutes later to the rural area to find a heavily damaged Nissan Pathfinder down an embankment in a ditch."
According to emergency officials, the SUV had been traveling westbound in light rain and crossed the center line, driving down the embankment on the east bound side of the highway.
"The vehicle traveled a great distance before striking two separate driveway culverts and became airborne," CCFR officials said."It flipped over several times crushing the roof, before coming to rest upright in the ditch. The driver was wearing a seat belt however the roof was crushed, a contributing factor in his injuries. The man had no signs of life when Firefighter-Paramedics arrived."
Emergency responders say the coroner was notified and responded to the scene.
"When he completed his investigation, firefighters used Holmatro Rescue Tools to extricate the patient from the car," authorities said."The SC Highway Patrol is handling the investigation."
