PRT director says SC tourism industry took $35M hit in storm

COLUMBIA, SC (AP) -

The director of South Carolina's tourism agency says the state's No. 1 industry took a $35 million hit from last month's historic flooding.

Parks Recreation and Tourism Director Duane Parrish attributes the loss to hotel cancellations along the coast, which is the heart of the state's $18 billion tourism industry.

The State newspaper reports (http://bit.ly/1Qqbt6V ) the cancellations result in a loss of $4 million in state and local taxes.

Parrish also told a Senate panel Monday that state parks lost $470,000 in revenue due to the storm that brought 2 feet of rain to some areas of the state. Parrish says significant damage at seven of South Carolina's 47 parks will cost more than $7 million to fix.

The Senate panel is taking testimony on the storm's costs.
