Identity of man shot, killed by Aiken Co. deputies released

AIKEN, SC (WIS) -

The Aiken County Coroner has released the name of a man shot and killed by deputies after they say he pointed a gun at a woman and refused to drop it on their orders.

According to the Aiken County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a call regarding a domestic dispute on Pine Drive Wednesday night. Deputies originally left when the scene appeared under control.

Capt. Nick Gallam of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office says deputies then heard gunshots and re-entered the home. He says they found Brian Gavin, 57, pointing a gun at a woman.

Gallam says the officers ordered Gavin to drop the weapon and shot him when he didn't comply. The Aiken County Coroner released Gavin's name Thursday morning.

The Aiken Standard reports at least three deputies were involved. The woman was not hurt.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division will lead the investigation.
