CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Officials with the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control announced on Thursday that the agency will reopen additional shellfish harvesting areas in Charleston County previously closed due to excessive rainfall.

"Water quality data indicate that the approved harvesting areas from Dewees Inlet north to Garris Landing are suitable for harvesting," said Mike Pearson, manager of DHEC's Shellfish Sanitation Section. "Harvesting areas from Dewees Inlet south to the Charleston Harbor remain closed. This closure includes the areas within Hamlin Sound. The Wando River and Schooner Creek, as well as their tributaries, also remain closed."
