CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Retiring Charleston Mayor Joe Riley says he's ready to pass the baton to Mayor-Eject John Tecklenburg.
Riley and Tecklenburg spoke to reporters Friday afternoon after meeting behind closed doors.
"He will take it to a new level in a really exciting time for the history of our city," Riley said about his successor.
Tecklenburg said Riley gave him "sage advice."
Riley also gave the mayor elect some homework, a copy of this year's city budget and a copy of next year's proposed budget.
Tecklenburg knows he has a tough act to follow.
"I say that no one that I know could have done in the last four years what this mayor has done so incredibly for this City of Charleston," Tecklenburg said.
The mayor elect said he will meet with city department heads next Tuesday and with city council members in the next two weeks.
Tecklenburg, who will become the city's 31st mayor will be sworn in in January.
