CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Animal Society was named the best local nonprofit on Friday.
According to CAS officials, thousands of people from across the Lowcountry (and even the nation) were voting for their favorite Charleston nonprofits by sending texts as part of the 2015 "Giving Back Awards" sponsored by Charleston Magazine and TD Bank.
Charleston Animal Society received the most votes and won the "Nonprofit of the Year" award.
CAS says voting took place in three phases over the past three months narrowing the field down to 5 choices.
"We are so honored to have such a passionate constituency, who love our community's animals," said Charleston Animal Society CEO Joe Elmore.
Local philanthropists and others involved in charity were honored at tonight's event. The other nonprofit finalists were: Avian Conservation Center & Center for Birds of Prey, LEARN Horse Rescue, LifeManagement Center, Inc. and Our Lady of Mercy Outreach Neighborhood House.
"We want to thank everyone who took the time out of their busy Friday night to vote for us," said Charleston Animal Society Director of Community Engagement Kay Hyman, "this means so much to us and even more to the animals who we lovingly serve each and every day."
