Sullivan's Island mourning longtime councilman, volunteer

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, SC (WCSC) -

The Town of Sullivan's Island will close temporarily Wednesday morning so that employees may attend the funeral of a former town councilman and volunteer.

William "Red" J. Wood, Jr., died Monday, according to a release from the Town of Sullivan's Island. He was 92.

Wood served five terms on Sullivan's Island Town Council, was one of the original founders of the Sullivan's Island Volunteer Fire Department and served the town in volunteer roles for a combined total of more than 67 years. Wood was recognized for his dedicated public service with a Congressional Record and The Order of the Silver Crescent, the release states.

Town offices will close from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. in observance of the Rite of Christian Burial at Stella Maris Roman Catholic Church at 1204 Middle Street on Sullivan's Island.
