CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Crews with the SC Aquarium Sea Turtle Rescue Program released a rehabilitated juvenile loggerhead turtle into the ocean on Tuesday.
The 75 pound turtle, named "Pointer," was released 40 miles offshore.
According to aquarium officials, a generous donor, John Hill, donated his boat and time to make the release possible.
"Pointer wasted no time and swam away as soon as he/she hit the water," SC Aquarium officials. The actual sex of the turtle is unknown since officials say the turtle is a juvenile.
Pointer was rescued on May 28 by the SC Department of Natural Resources who found the ill loggerhead in the water at Bay Point.
Officials said when the loggerhead was found, it had an older partial amputation to its front flipper.
A report by the aquarium states that Pointer would have no problems surviving in the wild with three good flippers.
