JOHNS ISLAND, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County Sheriff's Office says one person was taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds Wednesday night on Johns Island.
According to authorities, the shooting happened on Back Pen Road. Deputies were called to the scene at 8:00 p.m.
The incident report says a responding officer found the victim sitting on the tail gate of a parked pickup truck with at least one gunshot wound to his lower chest and possibly other gunshot wounds in other unknown areas.
The officer also saw the victim's mother and a neighbor rummaging through the driver side of the vehicle. According to the incident report, he also smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle.
The officer asked them to step aside and noticed the windshield of the vehicle was shattered from what looked like fresh gunshot damage.
He could also see that the front driver-side door was damaged by gunshots. He saw a second vehicle parked to the right of the aforementioned truck with gunshot damage to the windshield and driver-side window.
The victim said he was sitting in the driver's seat of the truck when an unknown person opened the passenger door and shot him. He said he wasn't sure why the subject would shoot him.
He also said he noticed an unknown vehicle driving past his house throughout the day.
The victim was transported to the hospital to be treated for injuries. A neighbor said he heard about eight gunshots and came outside to find the victim with gunshot wounds. He also said the victim mentioned a grey Chevy Malibu canvassing the area before the shooting. The incident report says the car was possibly a rental.
