A woman is challenging Beaufort County's new pit bull regulations after county officials determined last week she must have her dog spayed.
Gabriela Gonzalez, whose dog Kyra was brought to the county shelter after escaping her leash Nov. 24, tells the Island Packet of Hilton Head that her dog isn't a pit bull but an American bully. She says Kyra's a show dog and will lose value if she's spayed.
Beaufort County Animal Services says Kyra meets the definition of a pit bull.
Gonzalez asked the Beaufort County Magistrate Court to intervene Monday, saying the city ordinance regarding pit bulls is "worded horribly."
Animal law attorney Mary Ann Hall reviewed the ordinance prior to its adoption and found "multiple problems with multiple sections."
A hearing date hasn't been set.
