The director of South Carolina's insurance agency says he's concerned that residents who have health coverage through a soon-to-be defunct company aren't selecting a new plan.
Director Ray Farmer on Thursday reminded South Carolinians covered by Consumers' Choice that the cooperative won't exist after Dec. 31. He says only about 35 percent of its 67,000 customers have signed up for a new plan in 2016.
The third year of sign-ups for private, taxpayer-subsidized coverage sold through HealthCare.gov continues through Jan. 31. But Tuesday is the deadline for people who want their insurance to take effect on New Year's Day.
Farmer says Consumers' Choice customers have been notified multiple times they must choose a new company if they want continued coverage, but he worries that people are procrastinating too long.
