SC Health Rankings: Bottom Tier

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - South Carolina is ranked 42nd in the nation according to the latest America's Health Rankings.

Among the challenges for our state according to the report, a high rate of violent crime, large number of smokers, and  low immunization coverage for adolescents.

The report also found in the past five years, the number of children living in poverty increased 28% to 22.5 percent of the children living in the state.

The Palmetto State got positive marks for high immunization coverage among children as well as a low level of excessive drinking reported among people living in South Carolina.

The state of Hawaii had the highest marks, as the number one state in the rankings.  America's Health Rankings is a partnership of the United Health Foundation and the American Public Health Association.
