Interim Emanuel AME pastor accuses former members of slander

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The interim pastor of Emanuel AME Church, Rev. Norvel Goff, is suing 18 of his former parishoners for defamation and slander.

Goff filed the lawsuit in Richland County last week against Reid Chapel AME in Columbia.

The members named in the suit are accused of defaming Rev. Goff by making false statements that accused him of mishandling church funds.

He is suing for defamation, negligence, and unspecified punitive damages.

This comes after members of Reid Chapel AME Church in Columbia raised questions about his handling of large sums of money at the church when he was pastor.

Those members also sued Reid Chapel, trying to gain access to financial records from when he was pastor there.

In October, Goff held a press conference at Emanuel AME defending his character after a complaint was filed by a victim's husband was filed with concerns over the handling of donations.

Goff was named interim pastor of Emanuel AME, in June after then Pastor Rev. Clementa Pinckney and eight other members were gunned down in the church during a bible study.
