CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - The victim in an early morning collision in Ladson Sunday has been identified as Shelby Ryan Smith, 30.
Shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, Charleston County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to calls of a two car collision at the intersection of Ladson Road and College Park Road resulting in a fatality.
According to preliminary reports, the driver of a 2001 Dodge RAM 1500 was traveling east on US 78, approaching the intersection at College Park Road when it struck the driver of a 2010 Nissan Versa in the rear.
The driver of the Dodge fled from the scene at a high rate of speed and began driving down Ladson Road toward Wayland Drive, where the driver failed to negotiate the turn onto Wayland Drive. The Dodge then left the roadway and began to rollover multiple times, resulting in fatal injuries to the driver, later identified as Smith.
Officials say the victim was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.
The victim of the first collision was transported to Trident Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Speed appears to be the primary contributing factor for the fatal accident.
Both incidents remain under investigation by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office.
