COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina authorities are revoking a permit for a group that wants to honor the state's secession from the United States, the step that helped launch the Civil War.

The State newspaper of Columbia reports (http://bit.ly/1Y7CqSA ) the South Carolina Secessionist Party planned the rally at the State House next Sunday.

Party founder James Bessenger says the event was planned for near the Confederate Soldier Monument, where the Confederate battle flag was flown before state lawmakers voted to remove it in July.

It was a week later that police clashed with protesters at competing rallies by the Ku Klux Klan and the Black Panther Party. There were five arrests.

State public safety department spokesman Lt. Roger Hughes says intelligence indicated similar competing demonstrations shaping up for the planned secessionist rally.
