CPD investigating sexual assault at downtown apartment

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Officials with the Charleston Police Department say they are investigating a sexual assault that happened in downtown Charleston.

According to investigators, the assault happened at 3 a.m. on Monday at a St. Philip Street apartment.

The victim reported to authorities that around 2 a.m., she texted a male, which she briefly knew from school, about purchasing marijuana from him.

"She agreed to meet him in front of an apartment building on St. Philip Street," CPD officials say."They met in front of the apartment building".

The victim said the male subject was intoxicated from alcohol and high from smoking marijuana.

"The man put his arm around her and they took the elevator to the apartment," police say."He assaulted her after they got into the apartment."

A CPD report states that both of the subjects then completed the drug transaction and she left the apartment.

Investigators say the victim then went back to her apartment told her roommate about the assault and then notified the police.

Police say the suspect is a white male about 20 years old, between 5'6" inches and 5'9"  and weighing between 170 and 190 pounds.
