Charleston, SC (AP) -

South Carolina's chief justice is giving judges permission to ban cellphone use at the Charleston County courthouse.

The order signed Monday by Chief Justice Jean Toal said "certain electronic devices" can be a distraction and a threat to court safety and security. It allows the chief administrative judge to ban them from any part or all of the courthouse or to prevent them from being used during the trials of certain cases if the clerk of court approves.

Toal's order only applied to the Charleston County courthouse.

Two high-profile trials are scheduled in Charleston County for the North Charleston officer charged with killing an unarmed black man and a man charged with killing nine people at a Charleston church.
