CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston police are investigating after a body was found inside an abandoned, condemned downtown building.

According to an incident report, an employee with a landscaping company responsible for maintaining the exterior of the building, in the 500 block of Meeting Street between Jackson and Lee Streets, reported the body to authorities.

The employee stated he and his crew had last been on the property on Dec. 2 and smelled what he described as "urine and fecal odors coming from the building," the report states.

The employee told police he peeked through a window and saw the victim and thought he was sleeping and left him there. When the crew returned on Wednesday, he said, he looked through the same window and saw the victim in the same position as two weeks earlier, the report states.

Police say the victim was in "a partial sitting huddled position" between a makeshift bed and a wood board and was partially dressed in a sweater, underwear and socks. Officers reported seeing lots of clothing, blankets and other personal effects and several state ID cards in the immediate area.

Investigators say there was no apparent cause of death.

The Charleston County coroner will determine the person's identity.
