COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A woman from Buffalo, New York, was arrested while yelling at people attending a Statehouse rally organized by the South Carolina Secessionist Party.
The Department of Public Safety says 27-year-old Jatonia Devina Sanford was arrested Sunday on charges of public disorderly conduct and simple possession of marijuana.
Sanford was arrested after continuing to shout obscenities after officers asked her to stop cursing.
Law enforcement officers on Statehouse grounds far outnumbered those gathered for the Sovereignty Day Rally commemorating the 155th anniversary of South Carolina adopting its Ordinance of Secession.
Roughly 50 supporters gathered to listen to H.K. Edgerton, an African-American Southern heritage activist who carried the Confederate flag. There were no other speakers.
Sanford was among about 10 people who were there to oppose the event and the Confederate flag.
