CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

A former Charleston County Magistrate's Court employee is charged with stealing more than $4,000 from the court.

Heather Elizabeth Hughes faces a charge of breach of trust, according to an affidavit.

Court documents state the auditor for the Charleston County Summary Court notified officials petty cash in the amount of $4,442.55 was missing and unaccounted for from the magistrate's office between Nov. 6 and Dec. 1.

The affidavit states Hughes, who was a clerk in the Charleston County Magistrate's Office, admitted to investigators she took the money from her office for her own use. Prosecutors say the cash was removed from bank deposit bags.

Hughes was terminated last week, according to Charleston County spokesperson Natalie Hauff. Hughes had worked for Charleston County for two-and-a-half years, Hauff said.
