NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

SCE&G officials say crews have secured a gas leak in North Charleston that prompted a number of store evacuations.

At 3:40 p.m., authorities announced they had secured a gas leak in the area of 7800 Rivers Ave, and crews would remain on scene to make repairs.

Firefighters from North Charleston and St. Andrews fire departments originally responded to reports of a gas leak on 7800 Rivers Avenue just before 2:15 p.m.

When firefighters arrived they reported a slight smell of gas and found that a construction crew had ruptured a natural gas line near a building on Northbrook Boulevard.

"As a precaution, a portion of the strip mall was evacuated, including China Buffet and America's Best contact lenses and eyeglasses," NCFD officials say.

Drivers in the area are asked to use caution as emergency personnel handle the scene.

No injuries have been reported.
