CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Charleston city employees surprised outgoing Mayor Joe Riley on his last full day in office.
The employees lined up outside Charleston City Hall to greet the mayor as he left work Friday afternoon. They say it was their way of saying thank you to the man who has served as mayor since 1975.
"This is so nice," he said. "The citizens of Charleston are so gracious, I've got the most wonderful staff, and I've loved my work. I've loved working here and working for the citizens of our community. It's so gracious of everyone to turn out and surprise me this afternoon."
Many of the employees have worked for Riley for many years.
Riley will leave office on Monday at noon as Mayor-Elect John Tecklenburg is sworn in to office.
Riley stopped to shake hands with every employee who had lined up.
