Greenville launches solar energy initiative

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) -

Greenville’s Mayor Knox White; former U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis; and officials from the Green Ribbon Advisory Committee, Upstate Forever and SmartPower gathered at the ONE building in downtown Greenville to announce the city’s participation in "Solarize South Carolina," a community outreach program designed to help make solar accessible and affordable for South Carolina residents, according to a news release.

During the announcement, White proclaimed January 19 “Solarize Greenville Day” and encouraged all business owners and residents in the city of Greenville to consider solar energy "as a means to power their properties and contribute to a greener, more sustainable Greenville."

“When we talk about sustainability, it’s not just about reducing energy use,” White said. “In addition to protecting the environment and promoting a healthy community, supporting the adoption of solar energy also supports economic growth, and is part of the City’s ongoing commitment to making Greenville greener and more livable for our citizens.”

Solarize South Carolina is working to get 2,000 homes across the state to go solar over the next year.

Greenville’s city council began consulting with the Green Ribbon Advisory Committee in 2010 for input about environmentally responsible practices in designing, constructing and managing capital improvements and city operations in 2010. The seven-member committee also helped shape the city’s Sustainability and Climate Action Plan, officials said.

SmartPower is a Washington, DC-based nonprofit marketing firm that the city said works with government entities and utility companies to create advertisements and marketing campaigns that aim to raise awareness about clean energy and energy efficiency. The marketing campaign will encourage energy use behavior change and reduction.
