NORTH CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - Authorities have identified a 28-year-old man who died following a hit-and-run on Highway 78 in North Charleston Wednesday night.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office says Richard Martin of Summerville died from injuries sustained from the incident.
The North Charleston Police Department is continuing to search for a van in which authorities say hit Martin who was driving a motorcycle at the time.
Police say shortly before 7 p.m., officers responded to a hit-and-run accident on Highway 78 at the entrance to Plantation Mobile Home Park.
"According to witnesses, a red and black motorcycle was traveling west on Hwy 78 when a white in color Ford or Chevrolet work van turned left in front of the motorcycle," NCPD officials said."The van was attempting to enter the Plantation Acres MHP."
Authorities say the motorcycle and van collided, and the van continued into the mobile home park.
"The motorcycle rider was transported from the scene to Trident Medical Center where he later died," police said. "The van and driver have not been located."
Investigators say the van is believed to possibly have heavy damage to the front and front right quarter panel.
North Charleston police officials released the following information on the van on Thursday:
"From the witness accounts the description is as follows: white Ford or Chevrolet panel van with no known markings. A ladder was affixed to the roof that extended past the rear of the van and had a red towel or flag tied to the end. There is possibly a red and yellow reflective "caution" decal across the rear bumper. The damage should be on the right front fender and quite significant with black and or purple paint transfer from the motorcycle on to the van"
Anyone with information should call NCPD at 554-5700.
Highway 78 had been closed as crews worked the scene.
