CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

Mother Emanuel AME Church welcomed a new pastor Sunday morning.

The Rev. Dr. Betty Deas Clark has been named the new pastor of the historic church. Clark's appointment represents the first time in the church's history a woman will serve as pastor.

The Rev. Norvel Goff had served as interim pastor following the shooting of nine parishioners on June 17, including the church's pastor, State Sen. and the Rev. Clementa Pinckney.

Goff said he plans to run for bishop.

Clark preached her first sermon at the church Sunday morning after a handover ceremony.
