COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - One suspect is dead following a foiled robbery attempt at a Columbia barber shop.
Local news outlets report an employee and a customer at Next Up Barber and Beauty opened fire at two armed suspects who entered the shop demanding money Friday night.
Authorities say one of the suspects was shot and taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Officials are searching for the second suspect.
Richland County Coroner Gary Watts says authorities are trying to locate the family of the suspect who died before releasing his identity.
Elmurray Bookman, the employee who opened fire, says he shot at the suspects because he wanted to protect the crowd of people inside.
Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook says the men who shot at the suspects had concealed weapons permits.
