Suspect's escape attempt leads to I-26 shutdown in North Charleston

Authorities say a wanted man's attempt to evade arrest led to the shut down of westbound traffic on I-26 in North Charleston Friday afternoon.

Officials with the North Charleston Police Department say it all started shortly before 3 p.m. when officers responded to a Greyhound bus station regarding a suspect involved in an assault earlier in another jurisdiction.

According to police, as officers arrived on the scene, the suspect sped out of the location striking at least two vehicles.

NCPD officials say the suspect's vehicle then traveled onto I-26 westbound traffic where he eventually jumped from his moving vehicle near the Montague and Mall Drive exits.

The suspect's vehicle then crossed lanes of traffic and struck the guardrail, NCPD officials said.

The incident caused the shutdown of westbound I-26 traffic in the area of the Montague Avenue exit.

NCPD officials say the suspect was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

The Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Motorists reported several police units responding to the area.
