CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) -

Investigators say a child playing with a lighter may have started a fire reported Thursday afternoon at the Al Cannon Detention Center.

The fire was discovered shortly before 4 p.m. in a trashcan in the men's restroom located in the lobby near the detention center's warrants office, according to Maj. Eric Watson.

The the fire, which  was contained to the restroom, was quickly extinguished and did not pose a danger to the inmate population or the general public, Watson said.

The North Charleston Fire Department responded to the incident. Watson said the fire caused minor damage to the wall where the trashcan had been.

The incident remains under investigation.
