SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Some big names in college sports are coming to the Lowcountry to honor long-time Summerville High School Football coach John McKissick.
Clemson University head football coach Dabo Swinney, and new University of South Carolina head football coach Will Muschamp will speak at the Dorchester Two Educational Foundation Legacy Gala. The event takes place the first Saturday in March.
Gifts in honor of Coach McKissick will be used to expand and update the Sports Medicine program at Summerville High School. The program offers an opportunity for students to study athletic training and ultimately serve as student trainers.
Many pursue careers in the healthcare field as athletic trainers, physical therapists, and EMTs. The goal is to increase the number of student participants from 400 to 500.
The program also wants to create a new lab/athletic training room with state-of-the-art equipment to be used for teaching as well as training and rehabilitation of student athletes. The aim is to make the Sports Medicine program the flagship program in the district and in the state. Many items are needed to equip the new state-of-the-art facility, so the fundraising goal is $125,000.
