CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The State Law Enforcement Division and the Charleston County Coroner's Office are investigation the death of an inmate at the Al Cannon Detention Center Wednesday.
The inmate began complaining of chest pains and having difficulty breathing and was escorted to the detention center medical facility, and then transported shortly before 10 p.m. to MUSC, where the inmate later died, according to Charleston County Sheriff's Maj. Eric Watson.
The inmate, whose identity has not been released, was booked into the detention center on Monday by the Charleston Police Department on an outstanding bench warrant for an open container, Watson said.
It is standard practice to request SLED investigate an "in-custody death" or a use of force that results in death, he said.
The Charleston County Coroner's Office will release the identity pending notification of family.
