CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A new high school to be built in Mount Pleasant will be named in honor of a veteran educator who passed away in December.
The Charleston County School Board of Trustees voted 8-1 Monday night to name the new school the Lucy Garrett Beckham High School.
Beckham dedicated her life to students, serving as an educator for 40 years. She spent 17 years as principal at Wando High School before being named the Executive Principal of East Cooper Schools in July of last year.
Beckham was named the National High School Principal of the Year by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 2009.
Beckham, a 1970 graduate of the College of Charleston, was also named the 2010 Alumna of the Year by the school's alumni association and was the keynote speaker and recipient of an honorary degree at the College's 2010 Graduate School Commencement.
Months before her death, the road leading to Wando High School was renamed Lucy Beckham Boulevard.
She died on Dec. 13 at age 66.
