BERKELEY COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A Berkeley County deputy is recovering after accidentally shooting himself in the hand, officials say.

According to the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office 19-year law enforcement veteran was inspecting his weapon in his patrol car while on duty Monday afternoon when it went off.

The deputy initially planned on driving himself to the hospital but instead called for EMS.

Chief Deputy Mike Cochran says as standard practice, the incident is being reviewed by their professional standards unit.
