BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - A true Lowcountry legend has been laid to rest.
About one thousand people filled St. Peter's Catholic Church in Beaufort to say goodbye to beloved author Pat Conroy.
The best-selling writer died Friday at his Beaufort home.
He was 70.
In a fitting tribute on Tuesday to the literary giant, he was honored by everyone and everything that meant so much to him.

There was a large crowd from The Citadel, his old alma mater.
About 50 members of the class of 2001, and of course, a few of Conroy's class of '67 were present.
The service started with the song "The Water is Wide," a religious song, but also a reference to his first book.
"Pat Conroy was a person of enormous talent and goodwill and enriched everyone that he was in context with and will continue to and will continue as long as words are read," said former former College of Charleston president Alex Sanders.
Burial was private on a remote island Conroy loved.
