CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC/AP) - An American student killed overseas in Israel on Tuesday has ties to the Charleston area.

Taylor Force is a Vanderbuilt student who was killed in a knife attack in Tel Aviv.

Live 5 News talked to the family of the 29-year-old who are from the area.

They tell us they just learned of the news Tuesday afternoon and that Taylor was on a trip with classmates at the time.

Vanderbilt Chancellor Nicholas Zeppos wrote in a letter to students, faculty and staff that Force, who is a graduate student, was killed Tuesday in a stabbing attack.

Zeppos says all other students and faculty on the trip are safe and unharmed.

Zeppos called the incident a "horrific act of violence." Force was seeking to learn more about global entrepreneurship and startups in Israel while on the trip, Zeppos wrote. He was a student at the school's Owen Graduate School of Management.

Zeppos says university resources are being made available for students, faculty and staff who may seek counseling.
