Surfers braving the weather and waves for 2016 Icebox Open

FOLLY BEACH, SC (WCSC) - Any surfers in the Charleston area who want to brave the weather and the waves at the Washout still have time to enter the 2016 Icebox Open, South Carolina's only cold water surf contest.

Ocean Surf Shop, along with the Eastern Surfing Association, will hold the annual Ocean Surf Shop Icebox Open surf contest this Sunday at the Folly Beach Washout.

Organizers are expecting this to be the warmest Icebox Open ever.

There should be plenty of rideable surf on Sunday for the contest.  The forecast is calling for waist to stomach high southerly wind-swell. Sets should top out chest high in semi-choppy conditions. We are looking for winds to trend south/south-west at 10 to 15 knots Sunday as another cold front approaches our area.

Sunday will also be the year's "spring forward" time change, so we'll have and extra hour of daylight for the finals.

An early check-in party will be held at Ocean Surf Shop, 31 Center St. Saturday, March 12, from 5 p.m.- 8 p.m. Surfers can sign-up and check their heats. Food and drinks will be served. Directly after the contest on Sunday there will be an awards ceremony at Rita's on Folly Beach.

Open divisions will be held for men and women. The open men's divisions will start at 8 a.m.  This year, the contest will also feature an open "grom" division (The Myatt Grom Division) for the kids (kids under 14-years-old). There will be four-man, 20 minute heats, with top surfers advancing to a final, cold, big-money showdown.

Top prize in the men's division is $1000. The women's winner will score $500. The top prize for the Myatt Air Conditioning Groms (kids) division will be $300.

There will also be many prizes for the runners-up, including Ocean Surf Shop gift cards, bathing suits from Jenny Ocean for women, sailing charters from Fate Sailing Charters, gym memberships from Gold's Gym, and other prizes from local businesses.

Entry forms can be found at, or visit the shop to register.  Cost is $65 to pre-register, $80 to register on the beach, assuming there are still slots available. Cost for the women's or grom's division is $45.

For more information on the contest visit the shops Facebook page, go to, or give the shop a call at (843)588-9175.
