A local veteran was recognized with France’s highest honor for his service in World War II.

Robert Hennessee, of Hanahan, was one of six veterans from North Carolina and South Carolina given the National Order of the Legion of Honor by the Consul General of France in Atlanta last week.

Hennessee was a Staff Sargeant in the 142nd Infantry, 36th Division.

Consul General Denis Barbet thanked the men for their service in liberating France from oppression during the war.  The ceremony was held at the South Carolina State House on Friday.
