WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - Charleston Water System is advising the public to avoid contact with water in the Stono River near Lazy River Drive, South Shore Drive, and Headquarters Plantation after a sewer line break in a nearby tidal creek.
"The break was discovered Tuesday morning in a marshy area off Ashley Town Center Drive," CWS officials said."Crews are working to repair the line. It's not clear how much wastewater (raw sewage) leaked into the tidal creek, which drains to the Stono River."
Officials with Charleston Water System say they have informed the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control (SC DHEC) and will coordinate water quality sampling once the pipe is repaired.
"Until water samples from the tidal creek and Stono River show the water is safe, people should avoid contact with the water as a precaution, including fishing, wading, and swimming," CWS officials said."Charleston Water is posting signs and directly notifying residents/businesses in the area of impact."
