CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) - A former Lowcountry high school softball coach has pleaded guilty in connection to a sexual assault of a teenager.
Michael Dean Daniel of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of North Charleston, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to second-degree assault and battery.
The charge stems from a 2010 incident where a 14-year-old girl was sexually assaulted.
"It was alleged during the plea that Daniel, then 41, had non-consensual sexual intercourse with a member of the girls Junior Varsity high school softball team he was volunteering to coach," said officials with the First Circuit Solicitor's Office.
According to the solicitor's office, the victim kept the assault a secret for two years before disclosing the assault to law enforcement.
"Prosecutors were prepared to proceed to trial this week but were able to reach a plea agreement," prosecutors said."A decision on whether he will register as a sex offender will be made at a later date."
