NY man arrested for stealing $20k guitar, $1k painting from Hilton Head show

BEAUFORT COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - Authorities say a New York man who stole a $20,000 guitar and a $1,000 painting from a show in Hilton Head is now in custody.

Deputies arrested Michael Triarsi who surrendered Tuesday afternoon to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Triarsi was charged with grand larceny for the theft of the guitar and painting.

According to the sheriff's office, Triarsi returned the guitar to investigators, but the painting has not yet been recovered.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Sergeant Doug Seifert at 843-255-3414 or CrimeStoppers 1-888-CrimeSC.

The guitar, a 1969 Fender Stratocaster, and painting were reported stolen by singer-songwriter Donavon Frankenreiter following a show at the Poseidon restaurant on Hilton Head Island.

"Surveillance video from the restaurant was reviewed and captured the incident in its entirety," BCSO officials said."On the video a Caucasian male subject is observed walking into the backstage room, picking up the painting and guitar, then exiting the room immediately. The subject, a bar patron of Poseidon Sunday evening, then left the restaurant."

Investigators say they interviewed numerous witnesses on Monday including an Uber driver who drove the suspect to a home following the theft.

"Monday night investigators were able to identify the subject as 24 year old Michael Triarsi and learned he was on a flight back to his home state of New York," BCSO officials said."Law enforcement authorities in New York were contacted and responded to Triarsi's residence, where contact was made with some of his family members."

A report states shortly thereafter, Triarsi called investigators and made arrangements to fly back to Hilton Head and retrieve the guitar and painting, which he had given away to friends Monday prior to his flight to New York.
