MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) -

The Town of Moncks Corner honored two fallen police officers Thursday nine years after they were fatally wounded while responding to a call.

Friday will mark the anniversary of the shooting deaths of Officer Lonnie Wells and Cpl. Marcus Stiles.

The officers were responding to a domestic violence call when they were ambushed. The suspect was killed in an exchange of gunfire.

Family members of the slain officers looked on as officers and public officials paid tribute to their loved ones.

Several speakers noted that rarely a day goes by without hearing that an officer has been shot, and that it's more dangerous than ever to be in law enforcement.

Moncks Corner Mayor Michael Lockliear, who is serving his first full term as mayor, apologized to the family members that it's taken nine years to have a memorial service.

Lockliear promised as long as he's in office there will be a similar service every year.
