WEST ASHLEY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston Water System canceled a portion of sewer spill advisory that warned people to avoid contact with a creek and the Stono River.
The area no longer under the advisory is a tidal creek and the Stono River downstream of the West Ashley Greenway near Lazy River Drive, Tucker Drive and South Shore Drive.
The advisory remains in effect for the area upstream of the Greenway where additional water quality testing is being conducted, according to a release from CWS. There are no docks or public access points on this section of the creek, the release states.
CWS collected and the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control collected water samples in the area after a sewer line leak on March 15.
Those test results showed bacteria levels in the Stono River and the creek downstream of the Greenway are back to normal, the release states.
An estimated 278,000 gallons of wastewater spilled into the creek until crews could complete repairs to the line two days later, CWS officials said.
Engineers are now planning a long-term solution that involves installing a new pipe under the creek, the release states.
