CHARLESTON COUNTY, SC (WCSC) - The Charleston County School Board agreed to hire a lawyer to "review for criminal implications" in the results of a recent audit conducted of the district's budget.
Last fall, the district announced a deficit of $18 million. A forensic audit of the district's budget was completed last month.
The board made the decision during a specially called meeting on Thursday afternoon.
"It's to determine whether there's anything criminal," board member Chris Collins said. "A lot of money [in the budget] was not authorized."
