Summerville leaders to discuss concerns affecting minorities

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) - Community members in Summerville are gathering Thursday night at a town hall meeting to discuss concerns minority residents have.

Members of the Community Resource Center will talk about issues they want addressed in Summerville.

Among them, according to one of their leaders, Louis Smith, is the number of traffic stops involving minority motorists. That issue is one North Charleston has recently been confronting, and Smith wants it evaluated in Summerville as well.

He also wants to discuss the mayor's power. Town leaders have been struggling to decide how much power Mayor Wiley Johnson will have when making certain decisions.

Smith says he feels it is better for the African-American residents if the mayor does not have more control than town council members.

The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Doty Park.
