MONCKS CORNER, SC (WCSC) - Residents, visitors, and businesses in Moncks Corner can now take advantage of free WiFi at the ballpark.
This morning at 10, Google and the town of Moncks Corner announced that the Moncks Corner Ballpark will now have WiFi access.
Computers, laptops and handheld users will now be able to access the Internet for free.
"Our goal is to make access to information easier for everyone, said Rob Sanchez, Google SC Data Center Operations Manager. "Creating free access to online information at the new ballpark is a great way ensure the Moncks Corner community has access to information they need online."
Google provided a community grant to operate and maintain the WiFi network.
In all, Google has provided more than $430,000 to create WiFi hotspots across the Lowcountry.
For this project, Google has invested $60,000 in Moncks Corner's new WiFi and in year two, Google intends to expand the project to reach the future farmers market, playground and soccer fields that are already under way.
"The movement to provide free WiFi service to all visitors to the Moncks Corner Regional Recreation Complex is a wonderful gift from Google. As free WiFi service expands throughout Moncks Corner and the surrounding area, access to email and other web based activities will make people's lives easier, safer, and more productive while enjoying your time watching activities that are scheduled here in the Complex throughout the year," said Mayor Lockliear.
42 teams and 500 local attendees came out for the Opening Day ceremonies. A group of baseball and softball players cut the cord to make the wireless zone official.
