A. Daniel Cates named new vice president, general manager of WCSC

CHARLESTON, SC (WCSC) -

The parent company of WCSC has named the television station's next vice president and general manager.

A. Daniel Cates will begin work at WCSC on April 21, according to a release from Raycom Media.

“Dan has an exemplary background in audience development in both broadcast and digital platforms,” Don Richards, Raycom Media Group Vice President, said. “He is also well versed in coastal markets having spent a great deal of his career along the Gulf Coast.”

Cates joins WCSC having recently worked as Vice President and General Manager of WJHL in Johnson City, Tennessee.    

“I can’t tell you just how excited I am at the opportunity to be a part of the wonderful team at WCSC," Cates said. "I look forward to becoming a part of the Charleston community. WCSC will continue the rich history of Live 5 News while being a valuable partner to our broadcast and digital clients looking to grow their business in Charleston and the surrounding communities we serve.” 

Cates career began as a reporter in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, From there, he went on to WBRC and WBMA in Birmingham. 

Cates spent 10 years as the News Director in Mobile, moving to Director of Digital Content at WSPA/WYCW in Spartanburg, South Carolina and then as Vice President and General Manager of WJHL.

Cates has been honored with Emmy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Awards and Associated Press Awards for Excellence in Journalism, Investigative Reporting and Best Newscast throughout his career. 

Cates is on the Board of Directors for the United Way of Washington County, Second Harvest Food Bank of North East Tennessee, Spine Health Foundation and Tennessee Association of Broadcasters. 

Cates is a graduate of Troy State University. He and his wife Lori have three adult children.

Cates succeeds Rita Scott, who retired on April 1.
